BMW EV Charging · Union City, Atlanta · Charging set up before you drive off

How do I charge my BMW
at home in Atlanta?

The real question with a new electric BMW is charging it at home without it becoming a project. Georgia Power’s TOU-PEV rate makes overnight charging cheap, and we set up the Wallbox and app before you drive off, so it’s handled.

2026 BMW i4 Gran Coupé charging at a home Wallbox — all-electric i-Series at BMW of South Atlanta, Union City
01The brief

After the car itself, home charging is the decision that shapes how you live with it.

If you are buying a BMW i4, i5, or i7 in metro Atlanta, three things decide your first year: the home Level 2 install, the Georgia Power TOU-PEV rate, and the Electrify America activation. Get them right at delivery, not after.

Skip any one and you pay the flat residential rate on every overnight charge for the first year. So when you buy an i-Series from us, we help you line up the home Level 2 install and set up Electrify America before you leave the lot. Bring your own licensed electrician, or use BMW's trusted installation partner Qmerit — whichever fits your home.

The i4, i5, iX, and i7 all DC fast-charge; the numbers below are what those cars are rated to do. BMW of South Atlanta holds a 4.5 Google rating from 6,600+ reviews and is part of SONS Auto Group, the Nalley family dealer group.

For an EV-focused appointment that pairs the test drive with a home-charging walk-through, call (770) 954-7738. This guide is the local how-to; for BMW's program overview — Wallbox hardware, ChargingNetwork membership, Tesla Supercharger adapters — see our BMW EV charging program page.

02The four things at delivery

The four things we tell every i-Series buyer at delivery.

Four things matter most in your first month with an i-Series. We walk through them at delivery:

  1. Charge at home; treat public DC fast charging as the exception. The US Department of Energy puts home charging at about 80 percent of all EV charging, and a Level 2 charger is what makes that practical. The 10-to-80-percent road-trip charge at Electrify America is for the 2 percent of miles you drive outside Georgia.
  2. Enroll in Georgia Power's TOU-PEV rate before the first month closes. The Time-of-Use Plug-In Electric Vehicle rate charges far less per kWh in the overnight super-off-peak window than the flat residential rate does. The My BMW App schedules charging to start at the off-peak window automatically. Set it once and the savings are automatic; leave it unset and you stay on the flat rate until you switch.
  3. Get a home-install quote before you take delivery. You can use your own licensed electrician, or BMW's trusted installation partner Qmerit, whose fixed-price quote includes the permit pull, the electrician, the panel-load calculation, and the post-install inspection. Either way, what decides the job is your electrical service and panel space, not the age of the house: a 200-amp service with open breaker slots usually takes a Level 2 circuit as-is, while a 100-amp panel with no spare slots may need a service upgrade. A remote home survey establishes which one you have before the install date.
  4. Activate the complimentary Electrify America benefit at delivery. The complimentary Electrify America benefit — 2 years and 1,000 kWh on the i4, i5, and iX, or 3 years and 2,000 kWh on the i7 — activates through the My BMW App; we walk every buyer through the activation on the showroom floor at delivery, so it is handled before they leave.

Charging specifications & program terms: Charging speeds, EPA range figures, and complimentary Electrify America program terms reference BMW-published 2026 charging specifications and current BMW of South Atlanta program documentation. Verify current program terms with the BMW of South Atlanta team. Qmerit pricing varies by home; a Qmerit-certified installer reviews the project within 48 hours of the request and may schedule a site visit before quoting. Georgia Power TOU-PEV rate eligibility, rate schedules, and enrollment procedures are governed by Georgia Power and are subject to change; verify current terms at georgiapower.com.

Home profiles cover most installs

Two home profiles cover most metro-Atlanta Level 2 installs.

200-amp service, single panel, open breaker slots

This is the common metro Atlanta footprint south of I-20 and out into Fayette, Henry, and south Fulton counties. Installs in this profile typically run on the lower end of the quote range, complete in one day, no panel upgrade required.

The electrician pulls the permit, runs the dedicated 240-volt 50-amp circuit from the panel to the garage or carport, mounts the BMW Wallbox or third-party Level 2 charger, and tests against Georgia Power's safety codes.

100-amp panel, no spare slots — common in older in-town Atlanta homes

Older homes from Buckhead to Decatur often need a panel-service upgrade from 100 amps to 200 amps before the Level 2 circuit will fit. Qmerit's quote catches this in the remote survey.

The panel upgrade adds material cost and one to two additional days to the install, and Georgia Power has to coordinate the meter disconnect/reconnect.

A typical metro-Atlanta home install runs from low four figures to mid four figures, depending on which of these two profiles the home falls into and the length of the wiring run between the panel and the charger — whether you go with your own electrician or a Qmerit-certified installer.

We've helped owners set up home Level 2 charging across metro Atlanta, and the home's age is what usually decides whether it's a one-day job or a two-day one. BMW of South Atlanta · EV delivery coordination

Qmerit is a third-party installer network used by BMW of North America for the i-Series home charging program. Pricing, permit requirements, and installation procedures vary by home; the fixed-price quote is binding for the scope described in the remote home survey. Panel-service upgrades may require Georgia Power coordination; timelines vary.

04Public DC fast-charging

Electrify America near Union City: what we actually see.

We run DC fast-charge sessions on the i-Series cars that come through our service drive.

Here's where we send owners for a first public fast charge — the closest Electrify America stations to our Union City showroom, grouped by how far they are:

BMW i5 at an IONNA DC fast-charge station — public charging near Union City, Atlanta
A BMW i5 at an IONNA fast-charge station · the kind of public stop we point owners to near Union City.

Inside 15 minutes

Electrify America stations at Walmart locations along the I-85 corridor south of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

These are the stations to use for a first DC fast charge. They're close enough to the dealership that if the My BMW App handshake doesn't take on the first try, we can help sort it out.

Inside 30 minutes

Additional Electrify America stations at Walmart and Target locations along I-85, I-285, and the I-20 corridor through downtown Atlanta and East Point. These cover most public-charging needs, which are rare once home charging is set up.

Inside 60 minutes

Stations across the broader Atlanta metro extending north to Marietta, northeast to Lawrenceville, and southeast toward Stockbridge. These are useful as way-points on longer in-state trips, not as regular charging stops.

Public charger inventory shifts as Electrify America adds capacity.

Verify live station status, kW speed, and current pricing at the Electrify America locator, or use the My BMW App, which pulls live Electrify America status directly through BMW Maps routing and offers automatic charging-stop selection along your driving route.

05What our i-Series deliveries have taught us

What our i-Series deliveries have taught us about home charging.

Three patterns repeat across the i-Series ownership coordination we have done.

Set the My BMW App charging schedule once and it runs on its own

The Georgia Power TOU-PEV super-off-peak window is fixed. Set the My BMW App once to start charging at the window's open and stop at your morning target battery level, and it runs itself — most owners never touch it again.

Precondition the cabin while the car is still plugged in

Atlanta summers run 90-plus°F in July and August. Preconditioning the cabin while the car is still plugged in pulls grid power, not battery, and the car is cool when the owner gets in for the morning commute.

We demonstrate cabin preconditioning at delivery; it's the i-Series feature owners most often overlook. The My BMW App preconditioning button takes one tap.

Activate the Electrify America benefit at delivery

The 2-year, 1,000-kWh benefit on the i4, i5, and iX (3 years, 2,000 kWh on the i7) begins from delivery date, not from first use.

Owners who delay activation for the first 60 days lose two months of free public charging they had already paid for in the vehicle's purchase price.

We activate at delivery in the showroom on the My BMW App; the customer leaves with the benefit already live.

When your EV is in for service, you don't drop back to a gas loaner

One i4 owner brought his car in for service and drove home in an i7 loaner. That's an easy detail to overlook, but it matters if you have already reorganized your driving around a plug.

When an i-Series loaner is available, we'll try to get you into one, so your home-charging routine and app setup carry straight over.

06Level 1 vs Level 2

Level 1 vs Level 2, in plain numbers.

The choice, in real charge-times on a BMW-sized battery, shows why Level 2 is the answer for home charging:

Charging level Voltage Full charge time
75–100 kWh BMW battery
Best for
Level 1Standard 120-volt outlet 120V 35–50 hours at 1.4 kW typical Occasional charging only — not practical as a primary home method on a pure EV
Level 2240-volt dedicated circuit 240V 6–10 hours typical Primary home charging for every pure-EV BMW (i4, i5, i7)
Level 2 · BMW Wallbox9.6 kW / 40-amp 240V 5–9 hours typical Optimal home setup. The Wallbox Plus (up to 15.4 kW) charges faster still on NACS-equipped models

Level 2 home charging runs on a dedicated 240-volt circuit, the same kind that feeds an electric dryer or oven. For most homes that is a straightforward add; the panel details are in the install section above.

07BMW ChargingNetwork

BMW ChargingNetwork: one login, no app-juggling.

The practical win is simple. One My BMW App login covers Electrify America, EVgo, ChargePoint and the rest of the BMW ChargingNetwork, which BMW puts at more than 180,000 charging points across North America. Plug-and-charge handles authentication and billing on its own, so there's no card swipe and no separate app for each network.

Networks in the BMW ChargingNetwork include

Electrify America Shell Recharge IONNA Tesla EVgo Fast Charging ChargePoint

BMW EV drivers can also charge at Tesla Supercharger stations: use the BMW-approved NACS adapter at a NACS-partner Supercharger, or a station with the Magic Dock. The 2026 i4, i5, iX, and i7 use the CCS connector natively; confirm current Supercharger compatibility for your car with our BMW Genius team at delivery.

For the Union City owner who fast-charges a handful of times a year, that's one less thing to set up.

08Road-trip charging

Road trip charging from Atlanta, in actual minutes.

From those sessions, the typical 10-to-80-percent charge on a depleted i4 at a 150-kW Electrify America station runs about 30 to 35 minutes.

The 2026 BMW i4 supports DC fast charging at up to 205 kW on the large-battery variants (the eDrive35 peaks at 180 kW), the 2026 iX at up to 195 kW, and the 2026 i7 at up to 195 kW, per BMW of North America published charging specifications.

Common Atlanta routes our owners drive

Atlanta to Savannah · I-16 corridor~250 mi~4–4.5 hr · 1 DC stop
Atlanta to Nashville · I-24 corridor~250 mi~4–4.5 hr · 1 DC stop
Atlanta to Charlotte · I-85 corridor~245 mi~4–4.5 hr · 1 DC stop

Actual stop selection depends on starting battery level, current public-station availability and pricing, and the driver's preferred provider. The My BMW App optimizes against all three.

Charging speed and session time depend on starting battery state, ambient temperature, charger output, and the vehicle's current charging-curve behavior. Peak DC fast-charge speeds (up to 205 kW on large-battery i4; 180 kW on i4 eDrive35; up to 195 kW on iX and i7) reflect BMW-published specifications for the 2026 model year. Real-world session times vary.

10The questions buyers ask

Frequently asked questions about BMW EV charging in Atlanta.

How long does it take to charge a BMW i4 at home?

A 2026 BMW i4 charges from empty to 100 percent in about 6 to 10 hours on a 240-volt Level 2 home charger, depending on the battery configuration and amperage. On a standard 120-volt Level 1 outlet, a full charge from empty takes 35 to 50 hours, which is impractical as a primary method.

We've helped owners set up BMW Wallbox and third-party Level 2 chargers at Atlanta homes, through their own electrician or BMW's partner Qmerit; the overnight charge cycle is what every owner ends up doing.

Where is the nearest Electrify America station to BMW of South Atlanta?

The nearest stations to our showroom at 4171 Jonesboro Rd, Union City are typically inside the 15-minute drive radius along the I-85 corridor and at Walmart locations south of Hartsfield-Jackson. We use these stations to verify the first DC fast charge on every new i4, i5, iX, and i7 we deliver.

Verify the current station list, charger speed, and pricing at the Electrify America locator, or use the My BMW App for live availability.

How much does it cost to install a Level 2 home charger in Atlanta?

Typical home Level 2 installations in metro Atlanta run from low four figures to mid four figures, depending on electrical-panel capacity, distance from panel to charger location, conduit and trenching requirements, and whether a panel-service upgrade is needed.

You can use your own licensed electrician or BMW's partner Qmerit, whose certified installer reviews the project within 48 hours of the request, then quotes it. We walk each i-Series buyer through the options at delivery.

Does the BMW i4 qualify for complimentary Electrify America charging?

Yes. The 2026 i4 includes 2 years of 30-minute DC fast-charging sessions plus 1,000 kWh through Electrify America, per BMW of South Atlanta's 2026 charging program terms. The 2026 i5 and iX carry the same terms. The 2026 i7 carries 3 years and 2,000 kWh.

We confirm activation through the My BMW App on the showroom floor as part of each i-Series delivery.

Can I charge my BMW EV at a Tesla Supercharger?

BMW has announced that certain 2026-and-forward BMW EVs will gain access to portions of the Tesla Supercharger network through a NACS adapter, with broader native NACS port availability on future model years. Confirm current availability with BMW of North America.

The 2026 i4, i5, iX, and i7 use the CCS connector, which is the dominant DC fast-charging connector on non-Tesla EVs in North America and is natively compatible with Electrify America, EVgo, and ChargePoint. Verify current Tesla Supercharger compatibility for your specific BMW with our BMW Genius team at delivery.

What is the BMW Wallbox versus a third-party Level 2 charger?

The BMW Wallbox is the BMW-branded Level 2 home charger built for BMW EVs, with My BMW App integration for charging-schedule control, session monitoring, and cabin preconditioning. The standard Wallbox delivers up to 9.6 kW (40 amps) on a 240-volt circuit; the Wallbox Plus goes up to 15.4 kW on NACS-equipped models.

Third-party Level 2 chargers also work fine on BMW EVs through the standard SAE J1772 connector but lack direct My BMW App integration. Install cost through Qmerit is comparable across the BMW Wallbox and most third-party options.
